Shot & Killed
A gunman opened fire Saturday night at a drive-thru at a Taco Bell in South Los Angeles, killing an employee, authorities said.
The shooting happened shortly before 11 p.m. at the fast-food restaurant near the intersection of Century and Avalon boulevards, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said. The victim was shot in the torso with a semi-automatic pistol after an apparent argument, according to investigators.
Emergency services arrived to find the employee, identified by family members as Alejandro Garcia, 41, unconscious and out of breath.
Family members who spoke to Eyewitness News on Sunday said the dispute started over what they believe was a counterfeit $ 20 bill. They say Garcia worked the night shift at the restaurant with his son. The discussion began when the son allegedly refused to accept what appeared to be a counterfeit $ 20 bill from the alleged shooters.
“I guess they got upset and just started shooting,” said Garcia’s cousin, Nancy Garcia del Sol. “My nephew was close so he closed the window but the shots… went in. [Garcia] was shot in the heart, and that’s what killed him, and he died there… in front of the presence of his son. ”
She added, “The way that he died in front of his son, it was a really traumatic experience for my nephew.”
Garcia leaves behind three children. Family members say he worked at the restaurant one night a week to earn extra money for his family.
Meanwhile, two suspects were being sought in connection with the shooting, described only as men between the ages of 20 and 25.
“We are shocked and saddened to learn this happened,” Taco Bell said in a statement. “Our condolences to the team member’s family and friends at this difficult time. We understand that the owner and operator of this location are working with local authorities in their investigation and has reached out directly to the affected family to offer support. .. ”
As of Monday evening, the GoFundMe for Garcia’s wife and children had raised over $35,000.
