Alma Wahlberg, the mother of actors Donnie and Mark Wahlberg, has passed away, the brothers announced Sunday. She was 78 years old.
“My angel. Rest in peace,” Mark Wahlberg tweeted.
Donnie Wahlberg posted a longer tribute to his mother on his Instagram account.
“Time to rest in peace, Mom,” wrote Donnie Wahlberg. “I love you, I miss you, thank you and I will celebrate you, today and always.”
No information was provided on the cause, date or place of her death. Donnie Wahlberg often posted about her mother on her accounts and in July updated fans of hers on her health, writing that she “didn’t remember much and was often confused, but somehow she was still Alma.” .
The Boston-born mother of nine became a household name thanks to her appearances on the A&E series “Wahlburgers,” about the family’s burgeoning hamburger chain.
“He didn’t apologize for being who he was, but he never put himself above the rest. He would kick our ass if we were wrong, he would kick somebody else’s ass if he messed with us. He taught us well, made us pay the price when we were wrong, ”wrote Donnie Wahlberg on Sunday. “She was the personification of the word grace.”
He also included a video of them dancing at his wedding to one of his favorite songs, “If I Could” by Regina Belle. He wrote that she danced to that song at each of her children’s weddings, but at his, he surprised her by having Belle there to perform it live.
On the 2018 “Today” show, Alma Wahlberg talked about raising her and how difficult she was from the beginning. “I invented the craziest foods,” she said. English muffin pizzas were among her creations to feed the hungry portion of her.
More than a few of her children achieved great success and fame. Her son Paul Wahlberg, who is the chef behind the eponymous burger chain, also named Alma Nove restaurant in Hingham, Massachusetts, in her honor.

Alma Wahlberg is survived by eight children. Her daughter Debbie died in 2003.
