Andrew Brown was identified by family members as the man who was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy Wednesday morning in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
According to WAVY, a deputy sheriff shot and killed the man in Elizabeth City, the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. Heavy has contacted the sheriff’s department for additional information.
A relative, Jadine Hampton, told Heavy in an interview that Brown “had a beautiful smile, a contagious laugh.” She said that he was “a great storyteller as a comedian. He a wonderful father, who pushed his sons to be honor roll students even though he never finished school. ”
The shooting happened around 8:30 a.m. on April 21, 2021, WAVY reported. The name of the deputy has not been released. The authorities have also not revealed Brown’s name, but relatives confirmed it to WAVY and on social media. Authorities released almost no information about the shooting that claimed Brown’s life the morning after Derek Chauvin’s verdict returned attention to tensions between the police and the community.
“First George Floyd, now Andrew Brown and others, this is my hometown, where I’m from Elizabeth City, North Carolina, black lives matter to us, blacks must stick together, police are killing us,” he wrote a man on Facebook, joining a chorus of people who turned to social media.

Cause of Death – Shot By Police
According to WAVY reporter Jason Marks, “We were told the man was shot in his car.”
WAVY further reported that Brown was shot when he “got into his car and started to drive away, witnesses say.” Neighbors heard “between 6 and 8 shots,” the television station reported.
The sheriff’s department said the shooting occurred during the execution of a search warrant in the 400 block of Perry Street, WAVY reported.
No further details were released. WSPA-TV reported that, according to Marks, “the police have formed a line blocking the area where Brown was killed. His body was placed under a blue tent, and he was still there at 12:30 p.m., hours after the shooting.
Hampton wrote on Facebook: “My cousin is gone. The body is still there and this happened hours ago. “She added,” 💔😭. The last time I saw my cousin in October, we talked more than ever. Lots of laughs. Now I know why. BREAK. Jr. ”
“He was my first cousin,” she told Heavy in an interview. “He was 10 years younger and we didn’t grow up very close together, but we always saw each other at my grandparents’ house at Christmas every year when we were kids. Most recently, in October, we celebrated my grandmother’s birthday and he was there. We exchanged numbers in the hopes that he would visit me in Atlanta once the pandemic was over. He had a beautiful smile, an infectious laugh. A great storyteller as a comedian. He a wonderful father, who pushed his sons to be honor roll students even though he never finished school. He loved his family and would do anything to help. A huge heart. I’ve never known him to be violent or carry a weapon that I know of. We will miss him and my family is heartbroken about this. ”
About the shooting, he said: “I don’t have any details, except that they were treating him and he ran towards his car, and the police opened fire.”
People on Social Media Claimed Brown Was Unarmed
On social media, people claimed the man was unarmed. “The police were carrying out a court order, they shot and killed an unarmed man and he had been lying on the ground for 2 hours,” one person claimed on Facebook.
Authorities have neither confirmed nor denied the claim that Brown was unarmed. According to WSPA, Brown was the father of 10 children. He was 40 years old. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into what happened.

A local leader called for the immediate release of the body camera video if it exists. The authorities have not said. “If the body cameras were taped, that information should be released as quickly as possible to ensure justice is served,” Keith Rivers, president of the Pasquotank NAACP, told WSPA.
He added: “The sheriff has not spoken to anyone here… this is not the Elizabeth City Police Department, this is the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Department. The bailiff should address these people. The sheriff needs to speak with community leaders to let us know what is happening so that we can be part of this process. ”
The North Carolina police shooting came the day after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder in the death of George Floyd.
