The defendant, **Andrew D. Lester**, faces one count of assault in the first degree and armed criminal action. Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson said at a news conference Monday that the first charge presents a possible punishment of life in prison. (The prosecutor said Lester was 85, but documents and online records indicate he is 84.) ## Andrew Lester Age Andrew Lester is 84 years old. ### Andrew Lester was charged with shooting a 16-year-old boy Authorities said Lester is the man who shot 16-year-old **Ralph Yarl** twice. The victim’s aunt previously said the teen, who did not have his phone number, went to Lester’s house by mistake Thursday night. He had intended to go to a friend’s house nearby to pick up his younger twin brothers. “He pulled up in the driveway and rang the doorbell,” his aunt, Faith Spoonmore, said on the [GoFundMe campaign page](https://www.gofundme.com/f/nf36y-cover-medical-expenses). “The man of the house opened the door, looked my nephew in the eye, and shot him in the head. My nephew fell to the ground and the man shot him again. Ralph was then able to get up and run to the neighbor’s house for help. Unfortunately, he had to run to 3 different houses before someone finally agreed to help him after being told to lie on the ground with his hands up.” Initially, authorities did not charge Lester, saying further investigative processes were needed, including attempting to take a statement from Yarl and processing forensic evidence. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said Sunday that the homeowner was detained for 24 hours on a felony investigation, but he had to be released under state law if there were no charges. Lee Merritt, a lawyer for Yarl’s family, said Lester was held in custody for less than two hours and police took Yarl’s statement Friday. > 2 points of clarification concerning the shooting of [#RalphYarl](https://twitter.com/hashtag/RalphYarl?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw): > > 1. The suspect was not detained for 24 hours. He was released in under 2 hours after providing a statement to police. > > 2. Lester allegedly fired the rounds through a glass door. Yarl did not cross the threshold of the residence, he said. He declined to comment on whether the teen knocked on the door or rang the doorbell, saying this detail may be in dispute. Lester, who lives alone, told police that he had just gone to bed that night when his doorbell rang, according to court documents obtained by [KCTV](https://www.kctv5.com/2023/04/17/man-charged-with-two-felonies-shooting-ralph-yarl/). He allegedly said that he grabbed his gun, described by Thompson as a .32 revolver, and saw (as reported by the outlet) a man about six feet tall pulling on his exterior door. Lester said he believed someone was trying to break in, according to the documents. He allegedly fired two shots. The teenager ran away. Lester called 911. According to the documents, Lester said they did not exchange words. The teenager said nothing. Lester allegedly said: “It was the last thing he wanted to do, but he was ‘scared to death’ due to the size of the man and Lester’s age (84) and his inability to defend himself.” In the documents, Yarl told police that he had taken the wrong address when he was trying to pick up his brothers. He rang the bell and waited. The man inside opened the door and was holding a gun. Yarl told police he didn’t pull the door, according to the documents. He said they immediately shot him in the head and then, when he was on the ground, they shot him in the arm. “Don’t come around here,” Lester reportedly said. When asked by a reporter about a possible hate crime charge, Thompson said it would be a lesser charge, adding when pressed, “At that point, I would be talking about double jeopardy issues.” Jarl is black. Thompson said that Lester is white. “As a Clay County prosecutor, I can tell you that there was a racial component to the case,” he said. There was a warrant out for his arrest and bail was set at $200,000, Thompson said but noted that police had not yet arrested Lester. Police announced Tuesday afternoon that Lester was in custody. > Andrew Lester is IN CUSTODY at Clay County Detention Center. > > — kcpolice (@kcpolice) [April 18, 2023](https://twitter.com/kcpolice/status/1648389096690049025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) #### [Who is Michael Aaron Matthews?
