Anthony Alvarez was the father of a two-year-old girl and hailed from Portage Park, Chicago. His family described him as a very calm and quiet person with a passion for soccer. He was a supporter of the Pumas soccer club in Mexico City and supported them during their matches. Álvarez used to work as a machine operator at a meat factory in the Franklin Park suburbs, according to Block Club Chicago.

At around 9 p.m. on March 30, 2021, Alvarez reportedly visited his father in Portage Park to show him a Jeep that he had recently purchased. He also planned a family dinner at the time.

Just three hours later, police officers were chasing him in the 3500 block of North Laramie Avenue. He was chased to the 5200 block of West Eddy Street before the police officer shot him. The location was only two blocks from his place of residence.

After his fatal shooting on Sunday, Álvarez’s family did not know his whereabouts for a long time until the next day. His mother and his brother were unable to reach him by phone. Later, his mother visited the scene of the shooting and saw a commotion in the neighborhood. The police then showed him a photo of Álvarez on the phone, verifying his identity.

John Catanzara, the head of the Chicago police union who recently had his pay taken on misconduct charges, explained the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of Anthony Alvarez. Catanzara said Alvarez had fled police in a vehicle the day before his shooting. It is not known if the police were looking for him, but when an officer saw him the next day, he pursued him on foot.

After he shot Álvarez, he asked the officer, “Why are you shooting me?” to which he replied, “You had a gun.” However, people argue that body camera footage shows him dropping the gun and turning on his back before he was shot in the back. You can view the body camera images on the COPA website.

In his statement, Catanzara justified the shooting by saying: “There is nothing wrong with this shooting just because the bullet hit the offender from behind.” He added that the officer who shot him feared Alvarez might turn on him and fire the gun at him at any moment.

The body camera images of the police shooting against Anthony Alvarez have been published by the Civil Police Responsibility Office (COPA). The 22-year-old from Chicago was fatally shot on March 31, 2021, after police pursued him on foot for some distance until he reached a lawn in Portage Park.

Moments before shooting him, the Chicago police officer can be heard yelling at him twice to “drop the gun.” Immediately afterward, five shots are fired as Álvarez falls to the ground groaning in pain.

As Álvarez’s family and protesters in Chicago demand justice for the young man, the officer who shot him was placed on administrative leave. Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot stated, “The parties are well aware of the variety of emotions that will accompany the release of these materials and collectively we issue this statement and ask that those who wish to express themselves do so in a peaceful manner. and with respect for our communities and the residents of Chicago. ”

By the way, just two days before the Anthony Alvarez shooting, 13-year-old Adam Toledo was shot and killed by police on March 29 while he had his hands in the air.
