Anthony Mwamba was an Olympic boxer from Zambia who died of COVID-19 on January 21, 2021. He was born on August 8, 1960.
He competed in the men’s light welterweight event at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Mwamba won a bronze medal in the welterweight division at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
He won the Madness for Zambia Defense Day at OYDC 2013 for his accomplishments in which he served as an outstanding athlete in boxing.

Mwamba died at Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital Thursday morning from suspected COVID-19. Mwamba is among the people who played an important role in elevating boxing to the level it has reached today. He is also credited with the rise to fame of professional boxer Esther Phiri. May her soul rest in peace.
Zambia Boxing Federation General Secretary Bright Chomba said Mwamba’s death is a sad event for the boxing fraternity.
In an interview with ZANIS, Chomba said that Mwamba, who represented the country in promoting boxing at a high level, has left a void that will be difficult to fill.
He said Mwamba contributed a lot to the fraternity, such as bringing women’s boxing to light and grooming former World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Esther Phiri, among others.

He said that some young men who were being groomed by Mwamba were taken off the streets, adding that now the task has been left to those still living to carry on with the mantle.
