Jamal Lindsey Smith, a Chicago man, was arrested in the fatal highway shooting of a beloved youth baseball coach, who died while driving with his son on a Minnesota highway, police said.

Jamal Lindsey Smith was arrested in Illinois and expected to be charged with second-degree murder for his involvement in the July 6 shooting of Jay Boughton, Plymouth, Minnesota, police announced Thursday.

Police plan to extradite Smith to Minnesota, according to the announcement.

The announcement did not provide further details or say if anyone else was involved in the shooting.

Boughton and his son were returning from a team game around 10 p.m. on Highway 169 when someone in an adjacent vehicle shot him, causing the car to crash through a chain-link fence, through trees, and into parked cars, KSTP reported at the time.

His teenage son reportedly gave him CPR until an ambulance arrived. He later died in a hospital, according to police.

Police had said a “traffic altercation” had broken out between the coach and another driver prior to the shooting.

Authorities had asked the public for help identifying the other car, sharing snapshots of a light-colored SUV. Plymouth Police said Thursday they had recovered the suspect vehicle on July 23 but did not provide details or say where it was found.

Boughton had been an assistant coach for the past three years at the Armstrong Cooper Youth Baseball Association.

“Jay was the type of person you wanted to be with,” read a message on the association’s website, along with a link to a GoFundMe page for the murdered coach.

“He was an active member of our baseball family and his love for the game and his passion for helping players was second to none. Jay, you were loved by many and we will miss you deeply. ”
