Jamie Arnold a 31-year-old man was charged by West Midlands police with racially abusing Rio Ferdinand during Wolverhampton Wanderers’ match with Manchester United on May 23.
Jamie was arrested during the match in Molineux and has been accused of using racist words and gestures towards the former England defender, in addition to making homophobic comments.

Ferdinand was working as a television commentator for BT Sport at the time of the incident. Wolves fan Arnold will appear in Dudley Magistrates Court on July 29.
A statement from West Midlands Police said: “ It was the first game in which a small number of supporters were allowed onto the field following the easing of Covid blocking restrictions.
“The investigation has been led by PC Stuart Ward, who was appointed the UK’s first dedicated hate crime officer within a football unit.
“He is at the forefront of our unit’s ongoing work to end any abuse against footballers and fans.”
Former England defender Ferdinand revealed that he was racially abused while living on air for BT Sport and, after learning of his arrest, declared his desire to meet with Arnold to educate him on the matter.
“Fortunately, I just received a tweet from the West Midlands Police saying that a fan has been arrested and is currently in custody,” said Ferdinand.
“He says they take racism very seriously, which is nice to see and comforting. But listen, I’d love to meet up with the boy and just educate him a little.

“I think that’s part of the problem, punishing the uneducated is not the way to go and it is disappointing.
‘People have waited all these months, more than a year to go back to the stadium and then you walk in with such ignorance.
‘It wasn’t necessary, it wasn’t necessary, it wasn’t justified at all. Really disappointing. But listen, that’s just a small minority on the booth that was doing it. We were joking with the fans and stuff.
“The fans here, the excitement and atmosphere they created today was fantastic and that’s one person trying to destroy it for everyone else.”

Charges – Arrested
The wolves offered an apology to Ferdinand after the match and vowed to take the ‘strongest action’ against Arnold, including a lifetime ban on soccer matches.
A tweet from the club’s official account read: ‘We are so sorry, Rio. This person does not represent our club, our supporters, or our values.
“We can confirm that this person has been arrested by @WMPolice, who we will support to ensure that the strongest measures are taken, including a lifetime ban from our club.”
The charges against Arnold come after English trio Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho received racist abuse after missing penalties for the Three Lions in the Euro 2020 final with Italy.
