Charges – Arrested

At the time of his arrest, Cox was working as a deputy sheriff in the Morongo Basin Mountain / Desert Courts Division, according to the news release. Cox had worked with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for 25 years and began working within the Morongo Basin court division in late 2005, authorities said.

Cox was arrested on suspicion of “continuous se**xual abuse of a child,” “oral intercourse by a 14-year-old person” and “lewd and lewd acts with a child,” the sheriff’s department said in the statement.

The department said “none of the crimes” Cox has been charged with occurred during his time as a deputy sheriff. Authorities began investigating Cox’s alleged crimes after an unidentified person told authorities that Cox had se**xually abused him as a child. The sheriff’s department did not specify the current age of the accuser, the age or ages he was at the time of the alleged abuse, or the years during which the abuse allegedly occurred.

Cox was arrested and taken to the San Bernardino County Central Detention Center, where he was held on bond set at $ 750,000, according to the department’s news release.

The department added that Cox is “no longer” an employee of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Shannon Dicus, who has worked for the sheriff’s department since the early 1990s and was appointed sheriff earlier this summer by the San Bernardino County board of supervisors, said in the department’s statement that the allegations against Cox would be investigated “completely and thoroughly”.

“It is extremely disturbing when a member of this Department behaves in a manner that contradicts what we stand for as a law enforcement agency,” Dicus said.

People with information about the allegations Cox faces have been asked to contact authorities through the sheriff’s department’s Special Investigation Division information line. There is also an anonymous tip line available for people who believe they have relevant information but are unwilling to share their personal information with investigators, authorities said.
