The baby’s father, 26-year-old Jake Michael Guidry, was charged in late September with second-degree murder in the death of his daughter.
As previously reported by Law & Crime, officers were called to the couple’s home in the 600 block of Brule Guillot Road in Thibodaux to verify Zabria after receiving a call from Kageionna at approximately 12:15 a.m. on September 28. Upon arriving at the home, first responders said they found the dead baby in the cargo hold of Jake’s truck. After being questioned about the death of his daughter, Jake allegedly told investigators at the scene that he hit Zabria “too hard.”
Sheriff Craig Webre told The Houma Courier that the decision to indict Butler in connection with Zabria’s death was made after an autopsy report determined that the girl had suffered multiple serious injuries over the course of several weeks, indicating that his death was not the result of a single isolated beating.
“The autopsy findings listed the cause of death as battered child syndrome,” Webre said in a statement to the news outlet. “There appeared to be significant injuries over a period of time rather than a single injury that would have caused death. The investigation determined that her mother was aware of the abuse. She may or may not have contributed; we do not know. The father has claimed responsibility for her actions but has given no explanation other than that he hit the baby too hard. But the pathology report clearly indicates more than one incident. ”
According to the US Department of Justice, Battered Child Syndrome is defined as “the set of injuries sustained by a child as a result of repeated abuse or beatings.”
The sheriff said Butler was fully aware of the abuse inflicted on his daughter and failed to protect the baby.
“During the time the infant was injured, the mother was always in the company of the father and the infant and did not take any steps to seek medical attention or bring the abuse to the attention of the police,” Webre said.
Jake Guidry has remained at the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex on a $ 1 million bond since his arrest on September 28. If he is convicted, he would face a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.
Butler was booked into Lafourche Parish Jail on a $ 1 million bond. He also faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.
Sheriff Webre said Butler’s current pregnancy only magnifies the tragic circumstances of the case.
“It is tragic in many ways,” he said. “The mother is currently pregnant with another child. In cases like this, she really creates distress for many people, including the general public. A baby is strictly 100% dependent on her parents or responsible adults nurturing, loving, and caring for him. When the opposite happens, it is truly incomprehensible and horrible. In cases like this, it really shocks the conscience. ”
