Kim Avis a Scotsman who tried to evade justice by fleeing to the United States, where he faked his death on a California beach, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for ra**pe and other se**xual offenses, Scottish authorities said.

Kim Avis was found guilty of raping three women and se**xually assaulting a minor after a trial in the High Court of Glasgow, Scotland, last month. The 57-year-old man was convicted of 13 charges related to s**ex crimes that occurred between 2006 and 2017, and an additional charge for failing to attend an earlier trial date after fleeing to the United States, the Scottish prosecutor’s office said.

Avis has sentenced last week to 12 years in prison for s**ex crimes and three years for failing to appear at an initial trial in March 2019.

Avis was out on bail when he flew into Los Angeles International Airport in February 2019, under the name Ken Gordon-Avis.

Several days later, his teenage son reported him missing from Monastery Beach off the coast of Carmel, California, after he said Avis went swimming at night in treacherous waters. Searchers found no traces in the area sometimes called “Mortuary Beach” because of his lethal reputation.

After three days of intense searching, detectives began to suspect a hoax. They said the son’s account lacked crucial details and he couldn’t answer basic questions like how the two got to California’s central coast after flying from Scotland to Los Angeles.

California authorities then discovered that Avis, who is from the Edinburgh area, was wanted on multiple ra**pe charges in Scotland. Subsequently, his son returned home and faced no charges for filing a false report.

The investigation was turned over to the United States Marshals Service, which has the responsibility of catching the wanted criminals. Avis was arrested five months later in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and extradited back to Scotland, where he was in prison until his trial.

“Kim Avis did everything possible to evade justice for his crimes,” said Fraser Gibson, a s**ex crimes prosecutor for the Superior Court. “Thanks to the efforts of the police and prosecutors, working together with law enforcement agencies in the United States, he has been brought to justice.”
