Charged – Arrested

According to a news release from Hanley’s office, detectives with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office on June 8 received an alert about the possible disappearance of a newborn. Detectives from the South Beloit Sheriff’s Office and Police Department were dispatched to Larson’s address. Upon arriving at the home, Larson allegedly allowed investigators to conduct a search at the residence.

“During their search, detectives located the remains of a newborn girl who had passed away a few days ago,” prosecutors said. The investigation further revealed that the baby had been born alive.

A copy of the police report obtained by Rockford Fox affiliate WQRF-TV reportedly indicated that police discovered the baby’s remains “in a bucket” that had been placed in one of the vacant rooms of the house.

The newborn girl’s name was not released, although authorities have referred to her as “Baby Larson.”

Under Illinois state law, murder in the first degree is a class M felony punishable by 20 to 60 years in state prison, which must be served in its entirety followed by three years of mandatory supervised release. The penalties can be increased to life imprisonment if there are aggravating factors. If he is convicted, Larson currently faces up to 60 years behind bars.

Rockford Fire Department Division Chief Matthew Knot told WQRF that Illinois specifically passed “safe haven” laws to prevent such tragic events if a new parent is overwhelmed.

“You can deliver a child to a staffed fire station, the police, or the hospital within 30 days of the birth of that child,” Knott said.

“There are no questions asked, there is no prosecution, it is just designed to provide a safe place for the child to go in case a problem arises. We’ve all seen headlines before, and we’ve certainly seen what could happen simply by abandoning a child or leaving them in an unsafe environment, or whatever the situation is, but this is a suitable alternative. ”

According to Knott, once the baby is released to a staff member, the father relinquishes custody rights to the child, who is transferred to a local hospital for evaluation.

Online records show that Larson is currently being held in the Winnebago County Jail on a $ 100,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear before a judge on November 2.

Larson is not the only Illinois mother charged with murdering her baby. Fulton County prosecutors last week charged Joslynn M. Graham, 23, with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of her five-month-old son, Emery Lyons.
