Doctors reportedly said the baby’s injuries included bleeding to the brain, broken legs and multiple broken ribs.
In an interview with investigators, her mother said her daughter was fine before leaving for work that same day. She said that she fed the boy in the morning before putting her back to bed and leaving. She said that she worked until about 6 p.m. But she reportedly noticed Henderson texting her around 5 p.m. to inform him that she had caught the family’s 19-pound cat “lying” on the baby. Henderson didn’t tell her to go home to check on the boy.
Upon returning home, her mother reportedly told police that her daughter’s eyes appeared “puffy” from her head. The mother said that she called her own mother and after discussing the child’s condition, she decided to take her to the emergency room. They arrived at the hospital at approximately 7 p.m.
The investigators then interviewed Henderson. Court documents reportedly indicated that the man initially told investigators that he had no idea how her daughter sustained her injuries before allegedly saying that she was injured by the cat.
Doctors who had treated the girl reportedly told police that the girl’s injuries were consistent with “non-accidental trauma” and could not have been caused by a cat.
Investigators continued to pressure Henderson to respond, and he eventually admitted that he may have been “a little rude” to the baby when she changed his diaper, according to Southern Minnesota News.
Court documents indicated that hospital officials informed police that the baby had shown “little or no brain activity” after six days of treatment and medical providers had reportedly said that his chances of recovery “were grim. “. The prognosis sparked “end of life” conversations.
In another interview with detectives on Oct. 1, Henderson allegedly admitted that on the day his daughter was hospitalized, he “cradled the girl face down in her arms and hit her harder than usual,” according to Southern Minnesota News. . Henderson reportedly estimated that “the alleged assault lasted for five minutes and he admitted that he had struck the victim hard enough to break his ribs.” Later, prosecutors charged Henderson in Blue Earth County District Court with a felony assault in the first degree.
The Mankato Department of Public Safety reportedly confirmed that the baby was pronounced dead at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester on November 3.
The final results of the autopsy of the baby’s death are still pending.
Prosecutors have now charged Henderson with one count each of unintentional second-degree murder while he was committing a felony and first-degree manslaughter by maliciously punishing a child. His bail was also raised to $ 1 million.
