Lokman Slim was a Lebanese publisher who was found dead in his car in southern Lebanon on Thursday morning, hours after disappearing while driving to Beirut.

He was also an independent social and political activist who lived and worked in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Greater Beirut, southern Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley. He was also an internationally recognized commentator on Lebanese and Middle East politics.

Earlier Life, Career

Lokman Slim was born in 1962 in Haret Hreik. He lived until moving to France in 1982 to study philosophy at the Sorbonne. He returned to Beirut in 1988. Two years later, he founded the Dar al Jadeed Publishing House, which publishes Arabic literature and essays with controversial content.

His publications range from books banned by the Lebanese General Security to the first Arabic translations of the writings of Muhammad Khatami, the former reformist Iranian president, which generated controversy within the Shiite community in Lebanon. Several of Slim’s articles, essays, and translations have been published in newspapers and books in English, French, and Arabic.

Lokman Slim married his wife Monika Borgmann, who is a film director and writer. His wife Borgmann was born in 1966 and is the co-founder and co-director of the Umam research and documentation organization.

Missing, Found Dead

It was a prominent Shiite voice who spoke out against what he saw as Hezbollah’s intimidation tactics and accused them of intolerance of other political views. He was last seen after leaving a poet friend’s house on Wednesday night. His family said that he disappeared overnight. His wife tweeted that she was not answering his phone.

Slim had been missing for hours since Wednesday night and his family posted messages on social media looking for him. He was visiting friends in a southern village and he was expected to return to Beirut the same day.

He was found dead in his car Thursday morning, with multiple gunshot wounds at point-blank range. Slim was an intrepid critic of Lebanon’s powerful politicians, Hezbollah and their allies Iran and Syria. His assassination raised fears that Lebanon’s political tensions could escalate into a new wave of killings.

A security officer at the scene said Slim’s ID, phone and gun were missing. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with regulations. His phone was found later. An Addoussieh resident, who declined to name him, said the car was found on the country road before midnight.

Previously, Slim’s wife and sister had posted on social media that he had not answered his phone for hours and that he had not been seen since Wednesday night. Al-Ameer said he was visiting friends in the south and left his house after 8 pm. The family began to worry when two hours later when he was still not back home.
