Unfortunately, they also found “at least 40 dead animals” inside the truck. The organization called the ordeal “an unimaginable situation of animal cruelty.” “These animals have been living in these deplorable conditions since Thursday and who knows what they endured before this. The stench of this vehicle could be smelled from the road,” Eleventh Hour said in the statement. “We were working to get these terrified dogs out of this truck all night as they did everything they could to hide from the world and our lungs are still burning from inhaling the fumes.” In addition, the rescue organization said the “battered small van” was “soaked in feces, urine and animal remains” when they arrived. Volunteers said they “took out one garbage bag after another” full of “individually packaged” dead animals. The dead animals were said to be made up of “mostly tiny newborn kittens and puppies”. The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Shelter in Oakland, which also helped with the rescue, said the animals were living in “horrible conditions.” “The dogs and cats inside the truck were terrified, huddled in every corner. Rescuers spent the night removing petrified animals, one by one, from the truck, the smell was hard to bear,” the organization wrote in a Facebook post. “The animals were urinating while being taken to a safe place. It was painful to see the fear on the faces of these innocent animals, but even more horrifying to bring out the bodies of more than 40 dead animals, their remains individually wrapped. Everything in the vehicle was soaked in urine, feces, and animal remains.” The organization said that after Leonard caught fire at his home in Virginia, he loaded the animals into his Chevy Silverado to take them to Pennsylvania. “I think we say this every time we think ‘Oh, this is the craziest story we’ve ever seen.’ And then this was really the craziest story we’ve ever seen,” Megan Brinster, CEO of Ramapo-Bergen Animal. Refuge said in an interview with [WNBC](https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/abandoned-and-dead-animals-found-in-pickup-truck-in-new-jersey/4236233/), an NBC affiliate in New York City. “Seeing them in a truck was incredible.
