Matthew Sherrington A 14-year-old boy is feared to have drowned after he was last seen playing in the sea off Hartlepool on Thursday.

Matthew was playing in the water near Steetley Pier in Headland on the night of July 15 when he disappeared.

The area is known to have rip currents, with warnings attached to signs near the beach.

An exhaustive search was launched to locate the teenager, but the Coast Guard has since withdrawn.

Authorities believe it would not have been possible for the boy to survive in the water for so long.

Missing

A Cleveland Police spokesman said yesterday (FRI): ‘Police are conducting searches of the Headland Beach area in Hartlepool in an attempt to find a missing 14-year-old Matthew Sherrington.

Matthew was reported missing to the police yesterday, Thursday, July 15.

Matthew was reported to have been playing in the sea and had not been seen since this sighting.

“The agents immediately searched the beach and the maritime zone together with the fellow coast guards, but they could not locate him.”

Hartlepool RNLI volunteers launched two lifeboats Thursday night and searched throughout the night before retiring.

Chris Hornsey, Hartlepool RNLI lifeboat operations manager, said the search lasted 13 hours.

He said: ‘We have carried out a comprehensive search of a total of 13 hours in the area during Thursday night and early Friday morning working together with our colleagues from the Coast Guard and Police and have continued to do so until That the Humber Coast Guard told us to stand down.

“Once again I have to commend the outstanding commitment and professionalism shown by the volunteer team during the search.”
