Melanie Yates Age
Melanie Yates was 23 years old.
Yates is survived by her parents, three siblings, her husband of five years, and her two daughters, Lydia and Evelyn. The family said she had set out to help her career as a registered nurse in hopes of having three to five more children.
“The girls will no longer know their mother,” Lam Calderón said of her two granddaughters. “They are just going to have a memory.”
Shot & Killed
Lam Calderon said her daughter, Melanie Yates, 23, and her husband, Daniel, were preparing their daughters separately for bed when a loud bang was heard near their home.
Calderón said her son-in-law called Yates and asked if she had heard what sounded like fireworks to him, but she did not respond.
He looked for her, where she was in the house, and found her shot in the head, ” the victim’s mother told ABC 7 Chicago.
Paramedics were called to the scene and took Yates to the hospital.
Meanwhile, her husband took her two children to Yates’ parents and explained what happened.
He came in and told me that our daughter had been shot and we didn’t believe him. She was simply unfathomable, “said Calderón.
Yates was pronounced dead from her injuries at Vista East Hospital at 10 a.m. Monday after life support was removed, WGN-TV reported.
Zion police said they do not believe Yates was the target of the shooting.
Nearby residents reported hearing multiple gunshots in the area, and investigators collected six shell casings near the Yates family home, according to Fox 32.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is assisting the local police department with the investigation.
As of Friday morning, no arrests have been made.
Shawn Calderon, Yates’ father, said finding the person who fired the shot that killed her daughter won’t bring her back but will give the family closure.
Yates’ brother has launched a GoFundMe campaign to provide financial assistance to his brother-in-law, writing in the description: ‘Everybody who knew Lanie knows she loved Jesus Christ with every fiber of her being. There is no doubt whatsoever that she is in heaven at this very moment. But we on earth miss her very dearly.
‘We miss her passionate, powerful prayers. We miss her infectious laugh. We miss her beautiful singing voice lifting songs of worship. We miss her feisty, witty humor. We miss her dedication to being an amazing, godly mom and wife. We miss her. And we wish with every fiber of our being she was here, but we know she’s in a better place.’
