### ENTIRE stadium sings ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ after Michelle Brooks-Thompson’s mic fails

Michelle Brooks-Thompson has sung the national anthem at various sporting events, including the NBA, MLB, and the Duke’s Mayo Bowl game in Charlotte in December 2021. However, at Charlotte FC’s inaugural home game at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday night, his microphone was turned off for an entire song.

She was joined by 74,479 supporters, the largest crowd she has ever played in front of, who saved her performance by singing the anthem in unison. “It definitely wasn’t what we wanted at first,” Brooks-Thompson said in an interview Sunday. “But you know what? It became a magical moment.”

After the performance, Brooks-Thompson stayed behind for the football game, in which Charlotte FC lost 1–0. She later revealed that she spoke to fans in the stadium who were crying because they were moved by the entire crowd singing the anthem together. Within the first 24 hours of being posted, one of several videos of the impromptu singing had more than 643,000 views on Twitter.

“Well, it’s not the kind of viral we probably want. But it’s going to be very historic,” Brooks-Thompson said. Brooks-Thompson can, and often does, perform a wide range of music, but she is best recognized for her soulful renditions of the national anthem, which are often around 90 seconds long. The Massachusetts-based artist has been singing it at big events for the last 20 years.

In her own words, “It’s become a kind of trademark for me. And I don’t take it lightly. Being able to sing a song that represents our country, and sing it constantly, is very special.” Brooks-Thompson still isn’t sure what happened Saturday night. Everything went smoothly during soundcheck, which took place approximately three hours before game time. She was confident as she headed out into the field. After all, she had been singing the song for years and had only done it two months earlier in the same stadium.

For stadium concerts, Brooks-Thompson, like other professional singers, uses in-ear monitors so she can hear her own voice without feedback or delay as the sound travels from her own microphone to the stadium speakers. She started out smoothly, but things quickly began to fall apart. She heard static on her internal monitors and then couldn’t hear her own voice. She briefly returned but was immediately cut off again.

In the meantime, however, the jubilant fans took over with a full-throated scream. As the song progressed, the crowd got louder. Brooks-Thompson, on the other hand, was having a different experience than one might think. She could hear herself on her internal monitors again when she came back about halfway through the song. She saw this as a sign that she had returned and continued to sing the song as normal. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from her, it is possible that she added an extra punch to it.

As to whether there was a problem with the new sound system that had been installed for football, Brooks-Thompson was never given a full explanation. Brooks-Thompson added that she is already tentatively scheduled for a Carolina Panthers game in 2022. She has yet to be booked for another Charlotte FC home game, despite her desire to perform in one again. By Sunday, she was laughing about the whole thing.
