Michelline Toulouse Charged
She was already facing criminal mischief and petty theft charges for allegedly stealing $ 300 from the Saving Sage animal rescue on Boulevard Gardens in May.
After the shelter fired her for the alleged theft, a former colleague went to her home to see how she was doing and was shocked by the conditions she encountered.
Inside the house, there were more than 50 malnourished cats living in squalid and dirty conditions. At least 10 were already dead, according to WPLG.
Video footage showed the interior of the Toulouse home littered with feces and on the floor and counters and urine in bowls of water.
The cats were also found malnourished, hungry, and dehydrated and some of the cats lived in the walls.
The cats were allegedly abandoned by Toulouse weeks before being found by police and some of them were in need of medical attention, CBS4Miami reported earlier this year.
Gina Vlasek, who runs Saving Sage Animal Rescue, said Toulouse had been on many trips to ‘animal hoarders’ homes to save cats, and she was on one such visit just before the discovery of her own home.
Saving Sage released a statement about her former volunteer saying the organization was “saddened but relieved” by her arrest and that she hopes she will be “held accountable for her crimes”.
“It is unimaginable that a rescue partner is responsible for such horrors,” the statement said.
Toulouse also ran her own rescue called Love Is Feral, which helped “trap, rehabilitate and rehome homeless cats in South Florida.”
Toulouse is also facing theft charges after she was allegedly caught on surveillance footage stealing money from the animal rescue group.
Her boyfriend, Jerome Junior Vaughn, is also facing charges, according to News 7 Miami.
All 50 states have animal cruelty laws that can range from a misdemeanor to a felony.
Florida became the first state to have a state animal abuse registry called Dexter’s Law, according to the Florida Bar.
Florida requires those on the list to update their head and shoulders photograph and address and pay a fine of $ 50 a year.
It is a misdemeanor of the first degree if you do not register, update your address, or pay the fee.
