Around 8:20 a.m. On Wednesday morning, Montgomery County police were called to Frankel’s home in Kensington, Maryland to investigate a report of a dead body. When they arrived, 26-year-old Julia Birch allegedly told officers that she had killed Frankel. Police located Frankel’s body, gathered evidence that they said “supported Birch’s statement,” and detained Birch. In a follow-up interview at police headquarters, Birch allegedly again admitted to killing Frankel, explaining that she later called 911 to report the death.
Birch had been living at Frankel’s home in suburban Maryland for the past seven months, according to police.
“I understand you were paying the rent to Ms. Frankel,” Montgomery County Police Department spokeswoman Shiera Goff told The Daily Beast in an email, adding that Birch moved into her home. Frankel in January and was “an acquaintance of the victim’s relatives.”. ”
Julia Yost, who lives a few doors down from the crime scene, remembered Frankel as “very kind and compassionate,” and “non-confrontational and talented.” But she said that she always had a strange feeling about Birch.
“[Frankel] she was exposed to several female mentors while she was at Columbia University, and I think she was trying to make up for it by mentoring young women,” Yost told The Daily Beast. “There were other people living there intermittently.”
Yost, who cried several times while talking about Frankel, said that she regularly exhibited her sculptures in her garden. They talked almost daily, during Frankel’s afternoon walks around the neighborhood, according to Yost, who said Frankel was very active, agile, and vibrant for his age, even shoveling his own snow during the winter.
“He was a wonderful person,” Yost said.
However, Yost was not that much in love with Birch, whom she described as unfriendly and distant.
“I only saw that girl maybe three times, but when she saw her, she seemed kind of disconnected,” Yost recalled. “Here, everyone says, ‘Hello’ and ‘Bye,’ but I said, ‘Hello,’ and she just looked at me and moved on.”
Goff, the police spokeswoman, said she could not comment on Birch’s “mental state”.
“If there is a problem, I am sure it will be discussed during her appearance in court,” she said.
Birch does not have an attorney on file and could not be located. His parents did not respond to a voicemail message seeking comment.
“Nancy’s early life began as a waitress in the borscht belt each summer, earning her college tuition as an art student at Temple University and then Columbia,” she says. “When she was a young wife, she accompanied her husband to Germany, where she continued her studies with Hans Hoffman at the Munich Academy of Art. Sadly, Nancy’s husband died prematurely after her return to the United States, leaving her with two young children to support. Her daughter, an activist for peace, and hers, her son, her architect, have learned from this formidable mother and have had several grandchildren who rely on her for advice and support that only grandmothers can provide ”.
Friends of Frankel’s “loves her for her modesty, intellectual honesty, and spiritual authority,” explains the book’s Amazon page. “She really is kind of a ‘wise woman,’ and she gives her input at sunrise Bible study every Thursday morning before she comes home to teach.”

“Whether large or small, dynamic or serene, an explosion of shapes or a gentle curve responding to another in one piece, I hope my work conveys a sense of joy and wonder,” wrote Frankel. Studio Gallery Director Kelly Bresnowitz said she and others in Frankel’s art circle are planning a memorial “in celebration of the wonderful person and artist that was Nancy.”
“She was a huge contributor to our art community here at Studio Gallery, and we will miss her very much,” Bresnowitz told The Daily Beast. “Our last show with her was last January, and having her work here was amazing.”
