On July 14, 2021, at approximately 6:15 a.m., officers responded to the report of an abandoned newborn girl found in a wooded area in the 600 block of Greenway Road in Glen Burnie. Several officers along with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department Medical Unit responded. The newborn was transferred to an area hospital for care.

Update (July 15, 2021): On July 14, 2021, while detectives were investigating this incident, the boy’s mother was identified. She was provided with medical treatment and access to our crisis intervention and other county resources. The baby is fine and healthy. This investigation is active and ongoing.

The precise location where the baby was left was on Greenway Road near Pine Terrace, according to a report by Baltimore NBC affiliate WBAL-TV. She is only a few meters from the defendant’s address.

The Associated Press reported that police were alerted to the matter when someone called 911 to report “the sound of a baby crying.” Officers arrived and “found a naked girl with an umbilical cord still attached,” according to the AP.

Marc Limansky, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department, said at a news conference that the boy suffered “some injuries due to contact with brush, some bushes, scrapes, abrasions and that sort of thing.” But he added that “fortunately” the boy was still alive.

WBAL said the person who discovered the baby was a pedestrian and that the baby had been abandoned near a bike path that ran parallel to a residential street. That passerby, Ted Rutherford, said he and a second person who arrived on the scene struggled at first to determine whether they were listening to a human baby or an animal.

“When I got here, it sounded like … I didn’t know if it was a whining animal,” Rutherford told WBAL. “But then something said to me: ‘That’s a crying baby.’

“After we confirmed it was a baby, I went outside because I didn’t have a cell phone,” Rutherford continued. “Two people stopped but they didn’t want to, they didn’t want to get involved. And then my neighbor across the street, I was going out to water his flowers and I told him to call 911. ”

“Thank goodness I walked this morning,” Rutherford added, saying that he initially didn’t feel well and almost didn’t come out.

WTTG, an affiliate of Washington, D.C. FOX said responding officers “carefully removed the baby and took her to paramedics at the scene.”

“Various evidence was collected at the site of abandonment,” WTTG continued. “A survey of the area was carried out in which valuable information was developed by the citizens, possibly identifying the mother of the newborn.”

The various reports indicate that the accused was located, interrogated, and charged; His identity as the girl’s mother was also confirmed.

Police said the incident should never have come to this.

“Anne Arundel County Police want to emphasize to everyone that in Maryland, no one has to abandon a newborn baby,” police said in an additional statement obtained by WTOP radio in Washington, DC “Under Safe Haven Law, a distraught parent who is unable or unwilling to care for their baby can safely relinquish custody of their baby, no questions asked. ”

“A person invoking Safe Haven is immune from civil liability or criminal prosecution as long as the child is not harmed,” WTOP noted.
