Admits to Killing His Family – Charged

“I killed my family with a baseball bat,” Krause told Groton Police Department officers when he was arrested at the age of 22.

The defendant was discovered sitting naked on a patio chair and covered in the mud behind a neighbor’s house, police reports said.

“Orion began to sing softly,” wrote one of the responding officers in the initial arrest report. “Then Orion said, ‘I released them.’

In court Thursday, the convicted killer was repentant.

“I pray that we can process it in the future, hopefully together,” he told the court according to WCBV, a local ABC affiliate.

Krause also said that he was in a “psychotic state” at the time of the brutal killings and said the incident was “insane.”

Doctors at Bridgewater State Hospital, where he was detained after the murders, diagnosed the defendant with schizophrenia. However, it was determined that Krause was competent to stand trial.

A victim impact statement during the hearing was much more loquacious and seemed to rule out any kind of human excuse.

“The sheer brutality, the human indecency, the cruelty of these acts is beyond comprehension,” testified a woman who claimed to be the killer’s aunt, according to The Lowell Sun. “They are acts that with the voracity, the ferocity, the complete cruelty that our loved ones found that day is a darkness that is beyond any theology, or any philosophy and perhaps any psychology of understanding.”

Each of the four victims died of blunt force trauma, according to Middlesex Deputy District Attorney Thomas Brant.

On the day of the murders, Krause went to a neighbor’s house and immediately admitted what he had just done.

“He’s a little crazy and keeps saying he murdered four people,” the neighbor told a 911 operator. “We don’t know who he is. I let him sit in the backyard. He is just sitting in a chair, but he needs help. ”

Responding officers found Krause’s dead grandparents staring out the front window of his home. The defendant’s mother was also seated during her last moments and she was also discovered inside the house, near her own parents. Parker, the caregiver, was discovered with her head struck somewhere outside the house.

The Oberlin graduate called a former professor and expressed his desire to murder his family with golf clubs. In response, that professor tried to call the police and the killer’s family. The calls came too late.

Krause was originally charged with first-degree murder, but his plea deal and his lack of a criminal record resulted in convictions for second-degree murder.

“The resolution of this case today can in no way erase the incalculable loss felt by the families and friends of these victims,” Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement. “Following the 2017 murder, the entire Groton community mourned the loss of Elizabeth and Frank Lackey, Elizabeth Krause, and Bertha Mae Parker. We continue to have them in our thoughts today as this case draws to a close. ”
