**Phil Dowdell**, A prominent high school football player was among the four killed in a mass shooting that killed more than 20 people at the Sweet 16 celebration for the victim’s sister in a small town in Alabama.

As senior Phil Dowdell, who will graduate in a few weeks, celebrates his sister Alexis’ birthday at the Mahogany Masterpiece dance studio in Dadeville on Saturday night, the first gunshots were heard after police suspected it was a fight. The teenager received a full scholarship to Jacksonville State last February, local reports show, and was the first victim to be officially identified after state officials handling the case announced that four of the partygoers had died.

On Sunday, Dowdell’s grandmother, Annette Allen, said her granddaughter was among the dead after more than 20 people were said to have been shot down. The mother of the boy, whom Allen said had survived, was also shocked.

**In an interview,** Allen described Dowdell as a kind-hearted person who never gave anyone trouble.

It occurs when the police officers conducting the investigation have not yet uncovered a cause or a possible suspect. “He was a very, very humble kid,” Allen told the Montgomery Advertiser, shortly after the Alabama Police Department (ALEA) confirmed the death toll in a statement Sunday morning.

“He didn’t mess with anyone. He always had a smile on his face. Speaking to the local newspaper, Allen described his murdered grandson’s smile as a “million dollar smile” and confirmed that he had attended the 16th birthday party of his sister, Alexis, who was also a student at a local high school. Allen said the children’s mother was also there and was wounded by two bullets.

“They were celebrating Alexis’ birthday here,” Allen added. Everyone is mourning.

Authorities confirmed that the gunshots went off at around 10:34 PM Saturday at the converted dance studio Mahogany Masterpiece on North Broadnax Street in downtown Dadeville. Initially, local police did not provide any updates on the number of casualties or injuries for more than 10 hours, until a 9 am update from ALEA revealed that four of them had died. Witness testimonies indicated that at least 20 attendees had been shot earlier in the day, and Allen added that on Sunday morning parents still seemed crowded at local hospitals after waiting outside all night, and they still did not know where were their children.

He said they were currently traveling from hospital to hospital trying to find loved ones as police officers held a conference asking community members of about 3,000 to stay strong. But the conference offered no new details about the victims or a possible shooter, and the state investigators tasked with examining the case implied a tough investigation ahead.

“This will be a long and complex process,” said ALEA spokesperson Sgt. Jeremy Burkett told reporters that the crime scene is still being investigated and a methodical investigation will be conducted.

Meanwhile, Allen did not reveal any details about Dowdell’s mother’s condition, saying he only had two gunshot wounds.

The woman did not give information about the latest situation of Alexis, whose party was interrupted by the fury of the bullets.

Witness testimonies indicate that most of the injured were young, and Dadeville police officers initially stated that they believed the attack was caused by some sort of physical altercation.

The Tallapoosa County superintendent, who heads the Dowdells’ school, confirmed to AL.com on Sunday that local students were attending the party.

Meanwhile, the city’s police department announced on Sunday that they were handing the investigation over to the Alabama Police Department due to the size and potential consequences of the death investigation.

Joe Biden and the state governor were reportedly briefed on the shooting.

As new developments continue to surface, both the White House and Governor Kay Ivey issued statements on Sunday condemning the attack. “This morning, I mourn with the people of Dadeville and the citizens of Alabama,” Governor Ivey said in a tweet. “There is NO place for violent crime in our state, and law enforcement is keeping us informed as details emerge.”

A White House official added that the President was already briefed on the shooting and was “monitoring the situation.”

Witnesses reported that several people fled the scene screaming, and a disturbing unconfirmed photo currently circulating online shows the victims lying on the ground at the scene.

Some have asked for the post to be removed, although its authenticity has not yet been confirmed. It caused the small town an hour’s drive from Montgomery to trend on social media.

In the meantime, it was seen that the relatives of those who were hospitalized were waiting for a more concrete update on Sunday morning.

In the first official update on the attack, ALEA said, “The investigation is the result of a gunfight that occurred at approximately 10:34 PM near 200 blocks of Broadnax Street in Dadeville, Tallapoosa County.” Said.

The following agencies responded to the scene and are currently assisting with the investigation: the Dadeville Police Department, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the 5th Circuit District Attorney’s Office,” he explained.

“As the investigation continues, we have nothing else.”

When contacted Sunday, the county coroner did not confirm whether children were among the dead.

On Sunday morning, the scene was cordoned off and a tarp hung over the glass door of the dance hall on N. Broadnax Street.

Inside the establishment, photos showed police signs scattered across the front pavement, while onlookers reported seeing white sheets covering the floors.

The scene was noticeably less eventful than the night before when a line of lifeboats landed in the few blocks surrounding the dance studio.

Dadeville Police, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama Police Department State Bureau of Investigation, and others were among several agencies seen at the scene Saturday night. It is unclear whether police made any arrests, although the victims were transported to local hospitals, including the Russell Medical Center in Alexander City, for medical attention, according to witnesses. Russell Medical marketing officials told Alexander City Outlook that they received an influx of patients around midnight on Sunday, and they had recently been instructed to deal with several victims involved in the shooting.

“I was informed that we would be admitting patients to our hospital, probably at midnight,” Susan Foy told the newspaper.

“And it looks like we’ve got a few patients coming in. I understand there are quite a few people involved. He added that he could speak of a precise number of victims.
