Robin DiAngelo is an academic who studies whiteness. She also works as a consultant and affiliate associate professor in Seattle and teaches an online class, “Tackling Racism with Robin DiAngelo.”

She was born on September 8, 1956, in San Jose, California, and grew up in a poor, white family. That upbringing allowed her to see the impacts of classism and poverty, but she also came to recognize that experiencing poverty as a child would have been different if she hadn’t been white, she said on her website.

DiAngelo earned a B.A. in Sociology and History from Seattle University in 1991, where she graduated summa cum laude and was the top student in the class.

DiAngelo received his Ph.D. in multicultural education from the University of Washington in 2004, with a dissertation entitled “Whiteness in Racial Dialogue: An Analysis of Discourse.”

Her doctoral committee was chaired by James A. Banks. [3] In 2007, she joined the faculty at Westfield State University, where she was appointed 2014 Associate Professor of Multicultural Education.

She resigned from her position at Westfield in 2015. She now holds the position of Affiliate Associate Professor of Education at the University of Washington. She has two honorary doctorates from Starr King Seminary (2019) and Lewis & Clark College (2017).

DiAngelo has worked for 20 years providing diversity training for companies. She argues that racism is ingrained in all political systems and cultures in America.

In a 2019 article for The New Yorker, columnist Kelefa Sanneh characterized DiAngelo as “perhaps the most visible expert in the country on anti-bias training, a practice that is also an industry, and from all appearances a prosperous one.”

DiAngelo is a researcher in “Whiteness Studies and Critical Discourse Analysis, which tracks how white is reproduced in everyday narratives,” she says. DiAngelo is also an author and facilitator of “anti-racist education.” She also appeared on a podcast, “Come Through With Rebecca Carroll”, which was called “Robin DiAngelo Wants To Be A Little Less White”.

DiAngelo has won honors for his books, including “Is Everyone Really Equal?: An Introduction to Key Concepts in Critical Education in Social Justice”, co-written with Özlem Sensoy, and “White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for Whites to Talk About Racism “. “White Fragility” stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for 85 weeks. It is being translated into five languages, she said on her website.
