A horrified customer called Sainsbury’s “grandfather” steak sexist and “wildly inappropriate” and demanded that its name be changed.

**Rose Robinson** from Norwich stopped by Sainsbury’s in North Walsham for a few bites when she saw “Big Daddy steaks” on the shelves two weeks ago.

The 38-year-old claims that the ‘sexist and misogynistic’ name of her meats got her out of the way, and that the supermarket was completely ‘surprised’ about the thought process behind it. The mother-of-three described gender involvement in generic food marketing as “false and unnecessary”, as there are other ways she may have clinched her overweight nature.

“Great Dad’s steak is still on Sainsbury’s supermarket shelves in 2023, it felt wrong and unnecessary,” he said.

After she stumbled upon the steak, Rose said she applied to the customer service desk not to complain but to give feedback on her brand.

The manager claims he reached out to store staff to share some comments about the “unusual” brand before running a quick Google search for the term.

He claims that a staff member ironically said they weren’t allowed to say “ladies and gentlemen” over a tannoy for fear of offending someone.

Rose was shocked to discover that ‘grandfather’ actually had sexual connotations and was used to describe someone who ‘knows herself well’.

He explained: “I came home and said, ‘Oh my God, did I overreact?’ and I looked up ‘big daddy’ in the city dictionary to gauge a common understanding of the term, and it’s not even about a male powerhead, in fact, sexual prowess has a meaning.’

“Forgive me for speaking loosely, one of the terms that came up at the top of Google search referred to someone who was ‘good at his board’.

“I just felt it was unnecessary. There are so many ways one could name it that could equally convey the oversized nature of this particular product.

“It felt wildly inappropriate and I was annoyed by it.

“I was surprised and a little disappointed that it was possible in this era to go through the channels it takes to get to the shelves.

“A large steak would be exactly the same. There are marketing managers who are well-paid to come up with a good name for a product.

He was then advised to fill out an online feedback form.

The customer was so pissed off that he claimed he reactivated an inactive Facebook account to give Sainsbury’s an idea to encourage them to “rethink and do better”.

She claims she hasn’t heard from him since.

“I don’t really use Facebook, I reactivated an unused account because I was really worried,” Rose said.

“I felt like I wanted to do something to get the attention of someone at Sainsbury’s who could address this issue, ironically I don’t think they even noticed.”

“The lack of response definitely disappointed me a bit again.

“I was shocked and horrified as I was probably the only one who caught his eye, and I really don’t think it was an overreaction on my part.”

She claims she hasn’t heard anything from the supermarket, but her post got goosebumps from a stranger who suggested they should change “dad” to “Karen” to suit her.

Her mother, however, said she was the ‘least look-alike’ person she knew, but this time she had to speak up as the bold meat brand didn’t quite suit her.

Said ‘Big Daddy’ says it all, right? I understand the name was given to highlight its oversized nature and I felt it was probably marketed to appeal to a man rather than a woman. It certainly didn’t appeal to me.

“I feel that nothing sold as a generic type of food by referring to a genre is necessary. We all eat: male, female, or whatever you describe yourself today. I don’t think gender should come into play when marketing food.

‘I was really shocked. I’m not normally a big campaigner or campaigner, but it seemed completely out of place and it just didn’t feel right this time.

“It just feels like a stealth current and adds to a bigger picture that’s problematic.”

“Small things like this alone may not change the world, but many little moments or effects create a bigger picture and if you remove them like a ‘granddad’ steak, hopefully, it will change that big picture and the landscape will change. It’s very different if no sexist language is used in any meal visible.

“Even if I were to buy a steak, I certainly wouldn’t buy it in principle.” “I think the name should be changed. I’m not saying they should buy those here, food waste is a big problem among many things, but I definitely think that the packaging made after this point should maybe change its name.

“It doesn’t have to be something very negative in nature and potentially sexist and misogynistic.

“I got Karen’s obvious comment from someone who thought it was appropriate or funny, I’m not sure.

“This scorn implies that I’m making a fuss over nothing.” Karen is today considered a term for someone who is easily offended when there are much bigger problems in the world.

Honestly, I’m the least Karen person I know. It comes from someone who doesn’t know anything about me on the Internet.

Sainsbury’s said it strives to be an inclusive retailer and that customer feedback is important to them, so they “regularly check its product range accordingly.”

However, they noted that the name is also used by other supermarkets.

A Sainsbury spokesperson said: “We strive to be a truly inclusive retailer where people love to work and shop. Customer feedback is important to us and we regularly review rankings accordingly.’
