Whisler later took a video of himself urinating into the covered urinal, which “agitated” Ryan, but the trainer said nothing, the complaint says.
Ryan then called Whisler as his group was leaving the bar, sparking an argument that continued outside, prosecutors said. But Whisler allegedly removed Ryan’s mask from his face as he grabbed his shirt and punched him once in the face as witnesses attempted to separate the couple.
Prosecutors said the blow caused Ryan to fall backward down a nine-step flight and hit his head on the concrete. Responding officers found him lying on his back in a “pool of fresh blood” at the foot of the steps, according to the complaint. Ryan was rushed to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a brain injury that doctors said he couldn’t survive. He was removed from life support Sunday, prosecutors said.

Whisler turned himself into St. Paul police the same day Ryan died. A medical examiner ruled the man’s death a homicide due to traumatic brain injury, according to the complaint.
Whisler, who faces up to 40 years if he is convicted, is accused of unintentionally causing Ryan’s death. He was expected to make his first court appearance early Tuesday, prosecutors said.
Meanwhile, Ryan’s team has asked the Bloomington community to respect the privacy of the late coach’s wife and daughters.
“Please keep them in your prayers as they begin to mourn the loss of him,” the team tweeted Monday.
A message seeking comment from Whisler’s attorney was not immediately returned Tuesday.
