In indictment documents obtained by PEOPLE, the prosecution stated that Sweeney, 31, said police had beaten her wife for 10 years and pushed her against a wall after taking methamphetamine that day.
The prosecution claimed that Sweeney did not provide medical assistance to Chaipis and called 911 when he noticed that she had stopped breathing.
Doctors discovered that Chaipis was about eight weeks pregnant when admitted to the hospital, court documents said.

Sweeney pleaded not guilty to his charges during an arraignment on January 13, The News Tribute reported.

An attorney for Sweeney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The Pierce County prosecutor’s office told People on Wednesday that they intend to update Sweeney’s charges following Chaipis’s death.

Online records show that Sweeney is currently being held on $ 1 million bonds at the Pierce County Jail. A hearing has been scheduled for February 11.

On January 10, authorities responded to a call about an unresponsive woman at a home in the 5600 block of South Park Avenue, the Tacoma Police Department said in a news release.

Upon her arrival, emergency personnel was informed that the woman had had a physical dispute with the father of her children.

According to prosecutors, Chaipis sued for head trauma, including a possible skull fracture, and was pronounced brain dead at the hospital.
