Vanjae Ramgeet and her girlfriend Skylar Mack are an American teenager who returned to her homeland after she and her boyfriend spent more than 30 days in a Cayman Islands prison for violating COVID-19 quarantine protocols on the island.

Ramgeet was also stripped of her victory in the jet ski event and forced to return his prize money and her trophy. He was also asked to write a formal apology to the Cayman Islands Boat Association, and will not be allowed to compete in the first races of 2021.

According to Compass, the island passed stricter Covid-19 suppression regulations on November 28, the day after Skylar arrived on the island and the day before she broke quarantine on her.

Before the 28th, quarantine offenders could face up to a year in prison and/or a $ 1,000 fine. The stricter regulations state that violators can face up to two years in prison and/or a fine of up to $ 10,000.

Before the couple’s early release, Mack’s family in Georgia spoke out in an effort to get her home before her.

“She knows that she made a mistake. She acknowledges that but she’s pretty hysterical right now, “Skylar’s grandmother Jeanne Mack told TODAY in an on-screen interview on December 21, adding,” She’s crying. She wants to go home. ”

According to TODAY, Jeanne wrote a letter to President Trump asking for her help, claiming that she believed the Cayman Islands government was making an example of her granddaughter. “We are not asking her to get an exception. We ask that she be no exception, ”she said.

On December 25, United States Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue of Georgia sent a letter to the United States Embassy on behalf of Mack, requesting the Acting Consul General of the United States Embassy to return safely to House. “We understand that Ms. Mack has formally applied for the Prerogative of Mercy and we wish to express our support for her family’s call for clemency,” the senators wrote.

Charged & Arrested

Mack was arrested after knowingly violating the islands’ mandatory Covid-19 quarantine rules to watch Ramgeet compete in a jet ski event.

He arrived on the island on November 27 and was required to undergo a minimum 14-day residence quarantine, per Cayman Islands Covid suppression guidelines, according to government officials. On November 29, Mack left her residence and removed her geofencing bracelet, which was tracking her location, to go to the event, where she was detained at the scene by police who told the Cayman Compass that she was there for seven hours and did not wear a mask or practice social distancing.

Both she and Ramgeet, who was accused of aiding and inciting his girlfriend, were placed in a government facility for a 14-day quarantine, which ended on December 15, and pleaded guilty to their crimes. They were initially sentenced to a fine of $ 2,600 and 40 hours of community service each.

On December 15, the director of the island’s Public Ministry (DPP), Patrick Moran, decided that his sentence did not match the seriousness of their crimes and sentenced them to four months behind bars.

Attorneys for Mack and Ramgeet successfully defended more lenient sentences in the British Territory Court of Appeal on December 22.

On January 7, the Cayman Islands government issued a statement sharing that Mack and Ramgeet would be released from prison early, as the island’s Prison Service approved “pre-discharge license applications for the couple, under the terms of section 30 (2) of Prisons Act. ”

“Applications were considered by the office of the Director of Prisons and approved subject to compliance with the specific conditions of the license. They will both be released from prison on January 15 and Ms. Mack will leave Cayman that same day. At that time, both of you will have completed your sentence in accordance with Cayman Islands Law. None have received any special dispensation, ”the press release reads.
