Veronika Pyatt a California woman was arrested on child abuse charges after police said her 14-year-old son accidentally shot his 20-month-old sister in the leg inside his mother’s car.

According to the San Bernardino Police Department, her mother, identified as Veronika Pyatt, 37, continued to drive to her home and then proceeded to unload groceries instead of checking on her daughter or calling 911.

Pyatt, who claimed that she did not know her baby had been hit by a bullet, was booked in Juvenile County on one count of child abuse with the possibility of great bodily harm, a felony.

Pyatt is being held on a $ 100,000 bond. His son remains in the San Bernardino County Juvenile Detention Center.

According to police, the incident began to unfold shortly after 4 p.m., when officers went to a hospital to receive a report of a shooting.

Investigators determined that while Pyatt was driving in the 16th Street and East Street area, his 14-year-old son was ‘handling’ a loaded gun in the back seat of his car.

The gun fired a single bullet and struck the teen’s baby half-sister in the upper right leg.

“Although the 14-year-old told his mother that her gun went off, she went to his residence in the 2700 block of North G Street, claiming that she did not realize that her daughter had been beaten.” said the police.

Once home, the 14-year-old boy got out of the car with his injured sister in his arms and allegedly proceeded to dispose of the gun and other evidence in a trash can, while the children’s mother unloaded the supplies.

“Pyatt never attempted to take the weapon from the minor or physically examine her children,” according to the police statement. Additionally, Pyatt did not notify the police of the incident.

Pyatt’s son eventually told her that her sister had been shot and she took her daughter to San Bernardino Community Hospital, where staff notified police.

The boy was eventually transferred to Loma Linda University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Department of Children and Family Services has been notified of the incident and is conducting its own investigation.
