Weiss reportedly brought a large bag of mixed candy to her classroom that she reportedly bought at the Dollar General store to give to her students as prizes for a variety of activities. On September 23, she allowed two children to draw a prize from the candy box. According to the sheriff’s office, one student grabbed a “Dum Dum” lollipop while the other grabbed a package of candy called “Stoney Patch Kids.” Stoney Patch Kids are THC-infused jelly beans that remarkably resemble “Sour Patch Kids” in packaging and appearance.

“Marijuana edibles are cannabis-based food products. They come in many shapes, but the items, in this case, were sweet, ”Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in a statement. “They are often packaged in wrappers and bags with logos and colors that look like traditional candy brands. While they are available in other states and online, they are illegal in South Carolina. ”

The sheriff’s office said Weiss noticed that the student had grabbed the marijuana edibles and taken them from the boy, telling him to have a different candy. However, there was apparently more than one package of Stoney Patch Kids in Weiss’s prize box, as the boy was still able to leave the classroom with the illegal candy.

“We became involved in this case on September 23 after we learned that a Rocky Creek Elementary School student chose a package of marijuana edibles from a box full of candy that Weiss used to reward students,” Koon said. . “Detectives confirmed during interviews that Weiss took the student’s grocery package and told him to pick something else from the box. The student went back to the box and took another package of groceries. ”

After classes ended, the student brought the candy with him to an after-school daycare program and asked one of the teachers if they could help him open the package, according to a report from Columbia affiliate WIS-TV. NBC. The teacher reportedly realized that the package was not actually Sour Patch Kids, she found out where the student had taken possession of the candy and contacted the school.

According to WIS, the Rocky Creek Elementary School assistant principal then went to Weiss’s classroom and searched the candy prize box where he discovered at least one extra packet of THC-infused candy. Police reportedly described Weiss as “hysterical” during her interaction with the deputy director.

Agents executed a search warrant at Weiss’s home the next day, where investigators reported finding “packages of groceries similar to the ones the student picked up from the box in Weiss’s classroom,” Koon said.

Lexington School District One released a statement saying Weiss was no longer working with the district as of October 13.

“The safety of our students is our top priority,” said Superintendent Dr. Greg Little. “It is unacceptable for a staff member to potentially threaten the well-being of a child. We will continue to work to ensure that all of our children have a safe environment to learn and grow. Rocky Creek Elementary has an excellent reputation that will not be tarnished by the actions of one person. ”

Weiss was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center and released on a personal recognition bond.
