Charged in an assault on American Airlines flight attendant
A 20-year-old Irvine man was federally charged with attacking a flight attendant aboard an American Airlines flight from New York to Orange County last week, forcing the plane to divert to Denver.
The United States Attorney’s Office reported Monday that Brian Hsu has been charged with interference with the flight crew and assault within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States.
The attack occurred on the night of October 27 aboard American Airlines Flight 976 from John F. Kennedy Airport to John Wayne Airport.
Officials from the Professional Flight Attendants Association union said the passenger got up from her seat and struck the flight attendant at least twice in the face in front of the galley because she had accidentally collided with him.
The plane then landed at Denver International Airport shortly after 6:30 p.m. Mountain Time Wednesday night. The flight attendant was treated at a Denver hospital for broken bones in her face, the union said.
American Airlines told CBS News that they do not believe the attack was related to a mask.
“I understand that she actually hit her twice,” Mackenzie Rose, a passenger on the flight, told CBSLA last week. “I saw her walk back down the hall afterward. She had blood splatters on the outside of her mask. ”
Hsu is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in federal court in Southern California.
The president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, Julie Hedrick, said the flight attendant apparently struck Hsu as she passed through the first-class cabin. The flight attendant apologized, but Hsu apparently left her seat, confronted her in the kitchen area of the plane, and hit her in the face, Hedrick said. The pilots diverted the flight to Denver, where the flight attendant was taken to the hospital and treated for broken bones in her face.
The incident comes amid growing reports of assaults on crew members and passengers on commercial airliners, with the Federal Aviation Administration investigating a record number of cases involving “unruly behavior” on flights.
In a video message posted on Instagram, American Airlines CEO Doug Parker called the incident “one of the worst displays of rebellious behavior we have ever witnessed.”
Parker said Hsu would be banned from future flights on American.
“This type of behavior has to stop,” Parker said, adding that the airline is also working with the FAA, which is authorized to impose fines of up to $ 50,000 for such incidents.
