Daunte Wright is a black man who was shot and killed in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota by police during a traffic stop on Sunday, April 11, 2021. Wright Mother’s Statement

Daunte’s mother, Katie Wright, a white woman, revealed to the press exactly why her son was detained before he was fatally shot. “Daunte Wright’s mother says the 20-year-old called her when she was stopped by Brooklyn Center police around 1:40 p.m.,” the journalist tweeted hours after the incident. “He told the police that he detained him for air fresheners hanging on the mirror,” he told reporters. ABC News would add that police later learned that Daunte allegedly had a warrant pending.

Enraged by the life of the 20-year-old who was taken away by the police, a protest soon broke out at the scene with hundreds of protesters demanding justice for the death that many deemed unnecessary. Brooklyn Center police would respond by showing up at the protest in riot gear.

“The officer’s shooting at Brooklyn Center today is tragic. We are calling on the protesters to remain peaceful and not to treat peaceful protesters with force, ”Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott later said on Twitter.

Katie would also admit that she overheard a police officer tell Daunte to “hang up the phone and get out of the car” before he was shot. After hanging up on her, her girlfriend, who was in the passenger seat of the car, would soon call her crying and showing Daunte’s lifeless body in the driver’s seat.

Brooklyn Center police Statement

Brooklyn Center police issued a press release early in the evening saying their officers use body cameras and that the department believes both body cameras and squad cameras were on at the time of the shooting. The Minnesota Office of Criminal Apprehension is in charge of the investigation.

Police said the incident began with a stop for a “traffic violation” just before 2 p.m. in the 6300 block of Orchard Avenue.

According to the police report, “the agents determined that the driver of the vehicle had a pending court order. At one point, when officers were trying to stop the driver, the driver re-entered the vehicle. An officer fired his firearm and struck the driver. The vehicle traveled several blocks before colliding with another vehicle. ”

Wright died at the scene. A female passenger in the car sustained non-life-threatening injuries when the vehicle crashed, police said.

Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott issued a statement on Twitter Sunday night, calling the shooting “tragic.”

“We call on the protesters to remain peaceful and those peaceful protesters are not treated with force,” he said.
