Dr. Katherine Dodson was a local pediatrician who was found dead after an apparent murder-suicide in downtown Austin.
Pediatrician Dr. Dodson operated a thriving practice in downtown Austin with several other physicians as she maintained a constant presence at school activities and other functions for her three children ages 5, 7 and 11.
Austin police identified Dodson Wednesday as one of two people found dead in her office after another pediatrician, Dr. Bharat Narumanchi, took her hostage.
She was 43 years old. She had a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, where she graduated magna cum laude, according to LinkedIn. She studied medicine at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Her residence was at Vanderbilt University Children’s Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Two doctors have died after a protracted hostage situation in downtown Austin. On January 27, Austin police confirmed that Dr. Katherine Dodson, a local pediatrician, and Dr. Bharat Narumanchi were found dead inside the Children’s Medical Group building at 1912 W. 35th St. last night.
APD received a call at 4:29 pm on Tuesday, January 27, in which a male subject, believed to be Narumanchi, entered the doctor’s office with a gun and held hostages inside. In the course of a six-hour standoff between the police and the suspect, most of the hostages escaped with the exception of Dodson.
Those who were able to leave confirmed to the police that Narumanchi was inside and was “armed with a pistol and what appeared to be a shotgun and had two duffel bags.” Police believe Narumanchi shot Dodson sometime before 11 p.m. before shooting himself.
“Hostage negotiators arrived at the scene and tried to contact Dr. Narumanchi, but to no avail. After several attempts, it was decided to enter the building. SWAT officers from Austin Police entered and located Dr. Dodson and Dr. Narumanchi who died inside the building from apparent gunshot wounds, ”police said in a statement.
