Incident Detail
Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old black man who died last month in police fire in Akron, Ohio, was shot at by more than 40, according to a preliminary autopsy report released Friday by the bureau. Summit County Medical Inspector. Kohler said Walker suffered “several very devastating, life-threatening injuries”, including injuries to the heart, lungs, and arteries.
He counted 41 entry wounds and 5 gunshot wounds that grazed Walker. Kohler said he had five wounds on his back, but it’s impossible to say whether these came back when he was running or when he was shot. The coroner gave a summary of the report on Walker’s death at a press conference. The report was completed on Thursday.
Preliminary findings previously published showed that Walker had more than 60 wounds on his body. Summit County communications director Greta Johnson said on Friday it was “likely” that one bullet could cause several different entry wounds. Ken Abbarno, the attorney representing Walker’s family, said the coroner’s findings confirmed that Walker, who was unarmed, “died in a senseless and cruel way”. Kohler previously said that no drugs or alcohol were detected in Walker.
Walker was killed at the end of a pedestrian and vehicle chase after an attempt to stop traffic on June 27. He was not armed when he was shot, but officials said Walker fired from his car within 40 seconds of the chase. Police body camera footage released by the city on July 3 shows Walker wearing a balaclava, jumping out of the front passenger door of his moving car, and then rushing into a parking lot, where police opened fire. This blurry video doesn’t clearly show what officials said was a menacing move Walker made before he was shot.
Walker’s funeral was held Wednesday after days of protests. The update from the coroner’s office comes a day after the NAACP filed a direct petition with Attorney General Merrick Garland to have the Department of Justice open a federal civil rights investigation into the gun death.
Authorities said an empty pistol, a clip, and what appeared to be a wedding ring were found in the driver’s seat of Walker’s car.
The police officers involved in the incident were on paid leave while the state was investigating the incident. Seven of these officers are white and one is black. According to the police department, none of them have a disciplinary history, verified allegations, or fatal shootings.
The local police union said officers felt there was an immediate threat of serious harm and believed their actions and the number of bullets fired would be justified according to their training and protocol.
Less than 24 hours before the Akron chase, cops from neighboring New Franklin Township had tried to stop and then chased a car that matched Walker’s for the same minor equipment violations. When the car crossed the town’s border into Akron, an overseer stopped the pursuit.
Downtown Akron has been the scene of daily protests since city officials released body camera footage of the eight officers involved in the shooting. They declared a nighttime curfew in Akron city center starting at 5 am at 23:00.
