Cause of Death
Gilbert was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis (NF1) as a young child. The disease is a genetic condition that causes noncancerous tumors to grow in the brain, spinal cord, and skin. There is no cure. The Ira Kaufman Chapel said in an announcement on Saturday that Gilbert died “peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.”
He lived in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Gilbert caused a viral sensation when she wore a bow tie and dark-rimmed glasses for the 2011 lottery draft. The Cavaliers took the #1 pick and chose Kyrie Irving as the #1 pick. It was one season after LeBron James left the team to sign with the Miami Heat. Then, at age 14, Gilbert asked, “What’s not to like?” after her father praised her efforts and called her my hero.
He represented the Cavaliers in many other lotteries. Cleveland would get the #1 selection in 2013 and 2014. The team would draft Andrew Wiggins in 2014 and sent him to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a trade that brought Kevin Love. James, Irving, and Love would help Cleveland bring the championship in 2016. Cleveland dedicated the 2022-23 season to Gilbert. The team wore bow ties on their warm-up jerseys to honor him and draw attention to the illness.
