TikTok promises to take action
The social media platform TikTok has vowed to take action against online detectives who posted several disturbing conspiracy theories and disrupted the search. A series of videos have circulated on social networks where many users speculated and gave their opinion on the case related to the sudden disappearance of Bulley.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Ms. Bulley at this difficult time. We have mobilized resources to monitor the evolution of the conversation about this case,” TikTok said in a statement. “We are taking action against violations of our Community Guidelines, including removing content and accounts, and limiting the reach of some content by making it ineligible for the recommendation.”
Police face backlash
Law enforcement officials have also come under scrutiny for the way they handled the case, with former Home Secretary Priti Patel now joining the criticism of the force. Lancashire Police called out social media sleuths at a press conference last week where they revealed additional information about the day Bulley went missing. The researchers said they had taken an “unusual step” in disclosing this level of detail, as it was “important to clarify what we mean when we talk about vulnerabilities to avoid further speculation or misinterpretation.” The general public was visibly unhappy with the disclosure of Bulley’s personal details. Even Home Secretary Suella Braverman said she was “not satisfied” with the police’s explanation of why they revealed the now-dead mother-of-two’s private details.
