Sali Byberi, A man who died after a Taser discharged multiple times during an incident last month has been mentioned for the first time. Sali Byberi was killed in an incident in Braintree in which officers fired a taser after one of them was allegedly attacked.

The incident took place on Clockhouse Way, Braintree, and two officers were called in around 11:30 am on 21 November to report a disturbance. The Independent Bureau of Police Behavior (IOPC) is investigating the death of the 29-year-old man. Essex Police have made a mandatory reference to the body.

The IOPC claims that body video footage showed that while officers attempted to speak to the parties involved, Mr. Byberi allegedly assaulted an officer. They attempted to arrest Mr. Byberi on suspicion of assault and met resistance from him, the agency said. A single taser was discharged multiple times and temporarily incapacitated Mr. Byberi, and analysts are investigating this device.

A short time later he felt unwell at the scene and an ambulance was called. The officers remained with Byberi until paramedics arrived and provided medical assistance. Unfortunately, Mr. Byberi died at the scene around 1:15 PM and the mandatory police referral to the IOPC followed.

The IOPC said it secured video footage of the officers’ bodies, as well as conducting house-to-house investigations, and obtaining witness statements for the investigation. IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said: “Our condolences go out to Mr. Byberi’s family and friends. We have reached out to them to explain our role and will update them as our investigation progresses.

When a person dies after contact with the police, it is important that we conduct a thorough and independent investigation into all the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. After being forcibly notified, IOPC investigators went to the home and took charge of the forensic investigation at the scene. IOPC investigators also attended post-incident police proceedings, where the officers involved provided their accounts. We will continue to collect evidence that will allow us to reconstruct the events that took place.”
