Xuan-Kha Tran Pham is the suspect accused of assaulting two staff members at the Fairfax, Virginia, office of Democratic Congressman Gerry Connolly on May 15, 2023, according to Fairfax City Police.
“Police are currently on the scene at 10680 Main Street 140, the office of Congressman Gerry Connolly, investigating the assault of two staff members. The victims are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect is in police custody,” Fairfax police tweeted.
The motive is unclear, according to the police news release naming Pham, 49, of Fairfax. According to NBC Washington, one of the injured employees was an intern on his first day.

Police said the incident occurred shortly before 11 am on Monday when the suspect arrived at Connolly’s office. The congressman said in a statement that the man “wanted me before he inflicted violence on two of my team.”
A Connolly spokesperson told CBS News that the suspect was hit in the head by a senior assistant and an intern who was on the first day of the job. Two people with non-life-threatening injuries were taken to the hospital. The congressman was not in office at the time of the attack.
A spokesperson for the Fairfax City Police Department said police were on the scene within five minutes.
“At this time, it’s unclear what the suspect’s motivation might be,” Capitol Police said in a news release. “Based on what we know now, investigators have no knowledge that the USCP recognized the suspect.”
“Our focus right now is to ensure they get the care they need,” Connolly said of his staff and thanked first responders for their quick response. “My district office staff make themselves available to voters and the public every day. The idea of someone taking advantage of my staff’s accessibility to commit an act of violence is mind-blowing and devastating.” Last year, the US Capitol Police investigated approximately 7,500 cases of possible threats to members of Congress. There was a slight decrease from 2021 when there were 9,600 cases, but the number of cases in 2021 more than doubled from four years ago.
House of Representatives Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement that the safety of lawmakers and their staff is of paramount importance, especially given the increase in political violence in our country.
“I’ve asked the US Armed Sergeant and US Capitol Police to continue to focus on working with our members,” he said. “We must collectively take all available measures to protect our members and staff who serve the American people with patriotism and passion and deserve it without fear of their safety.”
The attack follows the February attack on the Washington apartment of Representative Angie Craig of D-Minnesota. Craig has since said that a man accused of him caught him in the elevator, assaulted him, and ordered him to let her into his apartment. She said she refused before escaping the elevator and threw hot coffee at him.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, was seriously injured in a violent attack at the couple’s San Francisco home last October. Pelosi’s skull was fractured, her arms and hands were injured, and she had to undergo surgery after an intruder attacked her with a hammer and allegedly wanted to kidnap the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, who was not at home at the time.
