Nakhla was going 138 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone on the West I-65 service highway when he swerved to avoid another vehicle and crashed, an investigator said last year. She reportedly suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
Thomas was in his junior year at the University of South Alabama School of Medicine. His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit, saying Nakhla previously claimed police issued him a medical card that exempted him if he was driving in violation of the law, according to AL.com.
Nakhla posted a $ 200,000 bond shortly after his arrest last year for manslaughter. His attorney did not immediately respond to a request from Law & Crime for comment on the murder charge. Attorney Dennis Knizley said last year that Nakhla’s Audi data was unreliable because it was flipped. He argued that the accident was an accident.
