According to a publication by the Orlando Police Department, Carvalho said she saw a “family withholding food from an 11-year-old boy” at the restaurant. She Spoke to the Family & Asked Why the Boy Wasn’t Eating
Carvalho first noticed the family when he said that there was food on one of their tables, except for the child. He said he asked at the table if there was something wrong and the boy’s stepfather, identified during a police press conference as Timothy Wilson II, said the boy would eat at home afterward. Carvalho later said that he noticed bruises on the 11-year-old girl’s face and arms.
“I could see that she had a big scratch between her eyebrows,” Carvalho shared during the press conference. He said that he seemed very calm and sad. “A couple of minutes later, I saw a bruise on the side of her eye. So I felt there was something really wrong. “He said he felt he had to take action:” I couldn’t see the boy go off without help, “Carvalho reported.
She said that once the boy indicated yes to his handwritten sign, she called 911 immediately. Orlando police broadcast the audio of the 911 call to Fox35 and Carvalho can be heard asking the operator: “I am very concerned and I don’t know what to do, can you give me any advice?” What I can do? The child has bruises and does not eat. The others are eating. ”
Charged the Boy’s Stepfather & Mother
The boy’s stepfather, Wilson, was arrested and charged with one count of child abuse in the third degree. He was re-arrested and charged with multiple counts of aggravated child abuse and child neglect, Detective Erin Lawler of the Orlando Police Department’s Special Victims Unit reported during a news conference. The boy’s mother, identified as Kristen Swann, told investigators that she knew about the abuse but that she did not seek medical assistance, Lawler said. She was also arrested and charged with two counts of child neglect.
Police described during a press conference that the boy was horribly abused. The boy, who was underweight, told officers they “tied ratchet straps around his ankles and neck, and hung him upside down from a door,” Lawler reported from the news conference. She “Said they beat him with a wooden broom, handcuffed him and tied him to a large dolly. She also said that he couldn’t eat regularly as punishment. ”
Lawler was moved to describe what had happened. She said: “If Ms. Carvalho hadn’t said something when she saw him, that boy probably wouldn’t be with us for much longer.” The couple’s 11-year-old boy and a 4-year-old boy were removed from the home and placed in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
