Charles McMillian Wiki – Charles McMillian Biography

Charles McMillian, the first bystander to witness George Floyd’s fatal arrest, began to cry as he replayed a video of the incident that unfolded in a Minnesota courthouse on Wednesday.

“I can’t, I feel powerless,” said 61-year-old McMillian, wiping his eyes with a tissue. “I don’t have a mother either, I understand.”

In the video, Mr. Floyd can be heard calling his deceased mother and telling officers over and over “I’m claustrophobic” and “I can’t breathe,” as they struggle to get him into a squad car and eventually drag him into the soil.

McMillian struggled to regain her composure on the witness stand, prompting the court to take a ten-minute break.

The gentleman had been telling jurors how he was arrested when he saw the police arrest Mr. Floyd last May. He tried to alleviate the situation and urged Mr. Floyd to follow the orders of the officers.

“I’ve had interactions with officers myself,” he said. “I understand that once you get in handcuffs you can’t win. You’re done. That’s how I see it.”

He also described how a few days earlier he had met with former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of murdering Mr. Floyd.

As the arrest continued, McMillian kept trying to intercede, he said once his testimony was resumed.

“Let him in the car, man,” he can be heard saying in the video. He told the jury that Mr. Floyd responded directly, “I can’t.”

An ambulance eventually arrived on the scene and Mr. Floyd, by then immobile, was placed on a stretcher.

McMillian went on to describe how he continued to interact with Officer Chauvin, walking up to his patrol and saying something like, “I see you like a worm,” even though he couldn’t remember the exact words him.

Body camera video of the interaction appears to capture previously unreleased moments of Chauvin’s reaction as well. A voice that Mr. McMillian identified as the officers can be heard, sounding somewhat shaky, speaking of how Mr. Floyd was a “considerable guy” who “was probably onto something.”

McMillian’s testimony was the latest in a series of different eyewitness accounts of George Floyd’s fatal arrest, adding to the many different videos of what happened.

Many of the witnesses recounted the personal trauma of watching Mr. Floyd die.

Earlier Wednesday, Christopher Martin, 19, a cashier at Cup Foods, a nearby grocery store, described standing there in “disbelief and guilt” as the arrest unfolded on the street. The store manager, his supervisor, told another employee to call the police after Floyd used a counterfeit $ 20 bill to buy cigarettes.

“If he just hadn’t accepted the bill, this could have been avoided,” Martin said.

Darnella Frazier, a teenager who captured the video of the arrest most watched by bystanders, told the court Tuesday how the incident stuck with her.

“It’s been nights I stayed up apologizing and apologizing to George Floyd for not doing more, not physically interacting and not saving his life,” Frazier said. “But it’s like, it’s not what I should have done, it’s what I should have done,” an apparent reference to Mr. Chauvin.

She added that watching the event unfold, she couldn’t help but think of the black men in her own family.

“When I look at George Floyd, I look at my dad, I look at my brothers, I look at my cousins, my uncles because they are all black,” Frazier said. “I have a black father. I have a black brother. I have black friends. ”
