The general area where the stabbing occurred is well known to Beaver State residents as the site of the Almeda Fire, which broke records last year, the most destructive in state history. Hell brought death and destruction to the region just over a year ago in Oregon’s Rogue Valley, taking with it more than 2,600 homes in the cities of Ashland, Talent, Phoenix, and Medford in about 24 hours. Believed to be the result of arson, more than 3,000 structures were burned to ashes and three people died before the fire was contained.

“Since we had the fire, we haven’t had a lot of action here so it’s kind of a surprise,” Carl R. Crenshaw II told KDRV. “It is not a total surprise. We have a lot of people passing by. I would say that 90 percent of the people who pass by I help from time to time. ”

The Ashland man, whose own home was lost in the fire, now lives down the street from the home where the stabbing occurred.

Crenshaw said that he heard the blare of sirens early in the morning, but that he realized the deadly disturbance even before that.

“My dogs always bark, and I think it was around two when I heard this guy pull over and he was trying to find a place to park here, and that was it,” the area man said. “I didn’t hear anything, but they always let me know when something happened and… I knew something was going on.”

Scattergood, who was “quickly detained,” according to the JCSO, is currently being held at the Jackson County Jail.
