According to a police report obtained by the station, Rumfelt returned home to Vine Grove on Wednesday at approximately 3 p.m. where she met her mom, dad and brother. Rumfelt’s family told police that shortly after his arrival, the suspect told them that he had killed a woman and that his remains were still in his car parked in front of the house.
Rumfelt was allegedly standing in the driveway of his home when he told them what he did, saying that “[the body] is wrapped in a carpet and has duct tape around it,” according to the police report.
One of Rumfelt’s family members called the sheriff’s office and deputies responded to the scene shortly after. Police said that upon his arrival, Rumfelt simply left his home and surrendered.
Investigators obtained a warrant to search Rumfelt’s car, a 1997 green GMC Sierra pickup truck. Agents searched the vehicle and allegedly confirmed the 29-year-old’s murder charge. The officers who carried out the order discovered a “multi-colored sleeping bag” that had been wrapped several times with duct tape. There appeared to be something large inside the sleeping bag, which police say was placed on the passenger side of the van.
Officers removed the sleeping bag from the vehicle, placed it on a Plexiglas table, and requested that a forensic doctor be dispatched to the scene. Upon the arrival of the coroner, the authorities cut the duct tape on the sleeping bag and found the body of a woman inside.
