Clara Jassmin Ledward, a Texas woman accused of murdering her husband and evading capture for more than two months by fleeing to Mexico, was detained after law enforcement officers shot her Thursday, police said.

According to a press release from the Odessa Police Department (OPD), officers arrested 29-year-old Clara Jassmin Ledward on Thursday night at a Brewster County hospital in Alpine, Texas. She later was charged with murdering her husband, 24-year-old Jacob Ledward, on May 16.

OPD said Ledward’s arrest was a multi-agency collaboration by federal and state law enforcement organizations, as well as authorities in Mexico.

“At the beginning of the investigation, the Odessa Police Department became aware of the fact that Ms. Ledward fled to Mexico. Our FBI partners helped us issue an arrest warrant for Illegal Flight to Avoid Prosecution so that we can work with the Government of Mexico to apprehend her, ”the department said. “On 07/29/2021, Clara Ledward was detained by Mexican authorities in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico. During her arrest, Clara Ledward suffered gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening. The Mexican authorities extradited Ledward to the United States and Brewster County to receive medical attention. ”

Dallas / Ft. Worth CBS affiliate KTVT reported that Jacob Ledward was found dead in the couple’s home located in the 2000 block of East 7th Street in Odessa. Following Jacob’s death, the OPD initially wanted to question Clara Ledward, but shortly thereafter issued an arrest warrant on suspicion of murder.

Later, the police learned that Ledward had relatives near the Ojinaga border and suspected that she had fled the country.

In the coming days, OPD said the department will work with partner agencies in the state to ensure Ledward’s safe transportation back to Ector County, Texas, for processing of her. She faces several serious crimes, including first-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence, a third-degree felony.

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances that led to Clara Ledward being shot by Mexican authorities, nor have details been released about how Jacob Ledward was killed.

Jacob Ledward’s family released a statement praising the successful efforts of law enforcement agencies to capture Clara.

“We, her family, praise and thank God for capturing her, as well as all those who have been involved in making this happen [],” the family told San Antonio-based news station KLST-TV. . “This is just the first step in getting ‘Justice for Jacob’.”

The Odessa Police Department did not immediately respond to Law & Crime’s request for additional details about Clara’s arrest or Jacob’s death.
